Cats, dogs and rabbits turn BLUE after fire in ink cartridge warehouse dyes AIR
DOZENS of dogs and cats have been left looking like Smurfs' pets after a fire spread to bags of ink and turned them BLUE.
A blaze broke out in a shed in Clacton, Essex, before spreading to eight sacks containing blue ink powder. Firefighters rushed to the scene in the coastal town and put the blaze out within an hour. But the smoke from the blaze quickly carried the ink powder into the air, covering nearby gardens and causing local pets to turn a bright blue colour.
Horrified pet owners have been trying to scrub the dye from their animals but have struggled to remove their new tint.
Terry Oliver, 33, came home to the bizarre site of a blue cat sat on his driveway.
The builder said: "I know there was a fire that spread on to some ink and it took it up and smoke took it up and went everywhere.
"It is not often you see a blue cat on your drive, I just did a double take and took some pictures.
"My daughter saw the picture and asked if it was a Smurf's cat."
Other pets have also been effected and Terry took a picture of his neighbour's dog which now has a blue tail.
Some gardens and outdoor furniture in the surrounding streets were also left with the unusual blue tint.
Chrissie Augrandjean, said: "I dog walk for a woman who lives opposite.
"When I went to her house, all three of her dogs were tinted blue and her two white cats were covered.
The blue was also on most of her sofas and clothing, and there was some in her hair.
"A firefighter told me I should wash the dogs just to be safe."
Linda Mclean said: "Both my cats and dogs are blue, I think it's from a fire where a canister of blue printer ink solvent exploded. Apparently all the firemen looked like smurfs."
Jasmine Shafey Rawlins added: "My rabbits who have been in the garden are blue, I'm freaking out.
"We've tried to scrub it off our bunnies but no luck."
Essex firefighters have returned to the scene following Tuesday's blaze before handing over the incident to Environmental Health officers.
A spokesman for Tendring District Council spokesman said: "Following a report from Essex County Fire and Rescue Service, the council is undertaking investigations in relation to this incident.
"This involves seeking advice in relation to some of the key ingredients of the material to determine what further actions are required.
"Once this information has been received it should be possible to identify how to deal with the material which would include removing it from the site.
"We will continue to work closely with our partners, including the Environment Agency who are aware of this incident, and Essex County Fire and Rescue Service."
Firefighters were called just before 9pm on Tuesday and put the flames out by 10pm.
A fire service spokesman said: "Due to the presence of the ink powder, crews requested the attendance of environmental health.
"The powder was confirmed to be non-hazardous by scientific advisors, but due to it's composition, it would continue to smoulder for some days.
"Firefighters dug a trench around the affected area of leaked powder and filled it with sand to protect the area."
